 WERN Executive

All decisions about WERN’s plans and progress are taken by the Executive. This comprises eleven members, one from each higher education institution in Wales with an education or related department. The Executive meets on a regular basis and the location of the meetings is rotated around Wales to facilitate the widest possible participation.

Sue, who was formerly an educational psychologist, is a senior lecturer in the School of Education Studies and Social Inclusion. Her research interests are capacity building and social inclusion and she was the Co-Director of the ESRC TLRP ‘Prosiect Dysgu Cydradd: facilitating teacher engagement in more inclusive practice.

She is the representative for Wales on the Executive Council of the British Education Research Association (BERA) and a member of the working party of the Strategic Forum for Research in Education (SFRE).


Professor Sally Power

Sally is a Professorial Fellow at the School of Social Sciences with extensive experience of research on the sociology of education and education policy. Her research interests are: sociology of education in general, education and social class, sociology of education policy and sociology of the curriculum. Sally is co-editor of Sociology and is on the editorial board of: British Journal of Sociology of Education; International Journal of Inclusive Education; International Studies in Sociology of Education; Journal of Education Policy; Journal of Educational Administration and History; London Review of Education; and Praxis Educativa. She is also series editor (with Peter Aggleton and Michael Reiss) of Foundations and Futures in Education published by Routledge.


Mr David Longman David Longman, Senior Lecturer in ICT, Newport School of Education

David is a Senior Lecturer in ICT Education in the Newport School of Education at the University of Wales, Newport. His interests are almost entirely in the field of ICT as it applies to all phases of education. Currently he is developing a small-scale project involving robotics in the Foundation Phase, a survey of Key Stage 3 literacy and ICT habits , and in Higher Education is setting up a Technology Enhanced Learning Group as part of a newly formed Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching at the University.

Gwyn is a native of Caernarfon where he attended Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen before graducating in Welsh at University College, Bangor, from where he was later awarded a doctorate on aspects of medieval Welsh literature. He served as Head of the Department of Welsh at Ysgol Maes Garmon, Mold, and as a Welsh Education Adviser for Gwynedd Education Authority before being appointed to the staff of Y Coleg Normal (subsequently the College of Education and Lifelong Learning, Bangor University). He was promoted Deputy Head of the College of Education and Lifelong Learning in 2007, with specific responsibility as Director of Teaching and Learning. His research interests are Welsh and bilingual education, bilingualism, and children’s linguistic development, especially where two languages are used in the classroom to impart information. He has held a number of advisory posts with ACCAC in the past, which reflects this expertise. He is joint editor of the series Trafodion Addysg – Education Transactions and is a member of the editorial board of Gwerddon, a new web-based academic journal established to publish Welsh-medium research papers. Under the aegis of the Research Centre for Bilingualism, which was established at Bangor in 2007, he is currently researching aspects of language heritage and immersion education in the context of Welsh-medium and bilingual schools.

Initially an infant school teacher, Trisha joined the Department of Education, Swansea University, in 1991 as a part-time tutor on the Primary PGCE and research officer for a funded project on mentoring in initial teacher education and training (ITET). She was appointed lecturer in 1995 and completed her doctorate (on primary student teachers’ school-based learning) in 1998. In 1999 she took on the role of Director of the Early Childhood Studies programme. In 2003 staff on the programme were moved from Hendrefoelan to the Singleton Campus to form a Department of Childhood Studies. Trisha took on the role of HoD until January 2008 when the Department merged with the Centre for Child Research; currently Trisha is Acting Co-Director of the Centre. Trisha has published extensively on a wide range of issues related to primary school education (particularly early years education) and more recently also within the field of ECS. She has presented at seminars and conferences in the UK as well as in, for example, the Czech Republic, Norway, Iceland, Malta, Australia and the USA. Trisha is a Trustee for both Children in Wales and Play Wales, sits on the Board of BBC Children’s Magazines and has been education consultant for ‘Harry and Toto’ a series of animated cartoons currently showing on Cbeebies.

Formerly a primary school teacher and Lecturer in Education at the University of Hull, Patrick’s research interests incorporate a broad range of topics. His publications include nine books on primary education, the theory and practice of argument, personal, social and moral education, teaching thinking skills, and action research. He is co-editor of The Journal of Pedagogical Research and Scholarship and is a member of the editorial board of Teaching Thinking and Creativity.

Dr Beauchamp is Director of Research for the School of Education and a Reader in Education. After many years working as a primary school teacher, Dr Beauchamp moved into higher education as a lecturer at Swansea University. He became programme director for the primary PGCE course as well as lecturing in primary science, music and education and professional studies. He also taught on a range of MA modules and supervised research students. He moved to fulfil the same duties with Swansea School of Education before taking the post of Programme Director for the BA (Hons) Educational Studies degree at UWIC in 2007.

Dr Beauchamp’s research interests focus on four main areas: primary education; ICT in education, music education (the area in which he gained his Ph.D. in 1996) and primary school science education. He is currently leading two research projects funded by the Welsh Educational Research Network (WERN) and is a member of an international group of researchers investigating the impact of the Interactive Whiteboard in education. He has served as external examiner for several universities.

In addition to the above, Dr Beauchamp is also an Additional Inspector for Estyn (where he undertook a full-time secondment for six months) and has inspected a range of educational providers. He is also a Governor in a primary school.

David Turner is Professor of Education at the University of Glamorgan. He works in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences where he has responsibility for promoting research in Education.

His research interests include the history of progressive education, policy, finance and governance of educational institutions, comparative education and theory in education studies. He has published widely on these topics, and has been a visiting lecturer in Japan, Mexico, Canada and the USA.

His book, Theory of Education (Continuum, 2004) has been well received, and won the World Education Fellowship Book Award for 2004/2005. Theory and Practice of Education (Continuum, 2007) was published in 2007.

Malcolm’s interests have focused on health promoting schools in England & Wales and more recently this work has been extended to China and Canada. Current research is being undertaken to evaluate the benefits of a Wellness Centre in a rural secondary school in Ontario.

Howard taught mathematics and ICT in secondary schools in Liverpool, Salford and Bristol for 16 years before joining the Education Department at Swansea University. He transferred to Swansea Metropolitan University in 2006 where he is a Principal Lecturer in Education and Director of the Centre for Research in Education. Howard currently teaches on the PGCE mathematics course, the MA(Ed) and is course leader for the Master of research degree (M.Res) in Mathematics Education. He is the co-author of 9 books in the fields of mathematics, ICT and assessment and numerous journal articles.
